NEW's Community Connection Spotlight - Flagler Home

St. Joseph's Villa has a distinguished history of providing human services in Richmond and Central Virginia. The Villa was established in 1834 and is one of the oldest and largest continuously operating nonprofit organizations for children and families in the United States. In 1977, St. Joseph's Villa was reorganized into a non-sectarian, multi-service organization. The mission of St. Joseph's Villa is "to provide children with special needs and their families the opportunity to succeed through innovative and effective services." St. Joseph's Villa fulfills this mission through the delivery of services to "at risk" youth, children with autism and other developmental disabilities, and homeless children and their families. These services are backed by a promise to Never Stop Believing in Children and their Families, which results in an unconditional commitment to the success of those we serve.

In 1989, in recognition of the fact that homelessness among children and families was increasing, the Villa established Flagler Home to provide transitional housing for homeless women and their dependent children. Flagler Home carries out the Villa's mission by stabilizing families and helping them to secure housing, employment and children's services in order to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty for future generations. Since Flagler Home's inception, over 600 mothers and approximately 1,200 children have benefited from services including transitional housing, full-day and after-school child care (at the Villa's Lewis Children's Center), job and career counseling, GED preparation and higher education support, mental health support, parenting skills training, and budgeting and debt management training. Over the years, Flagler Home has made a sustained difference in helping to end homelessness in the Richmond region.

Thank you so much for the support and recognition NEW is providing to St. Joseph's Villa and the Flagler Home program.

I look forward to attending the luncheon next month.

Andriea Ukrop, Grants Specialist, St. Joseph's Villa
