Last month the 49th Annual Duck Boat Worlds took place in NJ. Peter and Cynthia Kellogg sponsor the annual event. Duck Boats are a class of sailing boats, their hand crafted, single sail, and 16’ long. The purpose of the event is twofold. One is to promote the continued use and industry of building these beautiful hand crafted boats and secondly, to award $1000 to those sailors who maintain their boats in “Bristol” i.e. pristine condition. Emme participated in this event with her dad. You might say it’s a family tradition given that her dad participated in this event as a youngster. They placed 27th in time trials out of a field of 64. No small feat. But more importantly, Emme was awarded $1000 for keeping her boat in Bristol condition. There was only one condition in accepting the $1000. Emme had to donate it to a charity, any charity she wanted. Emme is 8 years old. Most 8 year olds would think of animal shelters, the SPCA, maybe the Ronald McDonald House. Then Emme’s mom Kathy explained about the Habitat Women’s Build. Emme presented us with her $1000 check to be donated to the Habitat Women’s Build.
